Root canal treatment: What are signs of infection in the Root Canal?

Root Canal is a treatment in which a badly damaged or infected tooth is repaired instead of removed. The root canal means cleaning the canals inside the tooth root. Earlier, it was a very painful treatment, but with dental advancement and technology,  most people feel little pain or no pain during this treatment.

In fact, it is very painful to live with a damaged or infected tooth. Root canal treatment helps to relieve pain, and it includes alternatives like extracting the damaged tooth, replacing the tooth with a dental implant and no further treatment required. It is a common dental procedure and has rare chances of infection, although people face mild to severe chances of infection after the procedure if it is not properly considered. Many of you are curious to know about the signs of risk and infection associated with the root canal. It is important to know the early signs of infection to reduce the major complications.

Here are the five major signs of infection after root canal treatment to identify the symptoms and take the necessary treatment:

  1. Pain: After the treatment, discomfort may be expected; if the pain should last for more than a few days after the treatment is performed, there could be an indication of something wrong, or the infection may occur. Pain may indicate infection caused by post–root canal treatment. You should go to the dental clinic as soon as possible to avoid any serious problems.

  1. Swelling: Little swelling around the area is normal. But if it involves other parts of the body like the mouth, neck or face, then it is a sign of infection, and urgent treatment is required.

  1. Fever: Fever is a natural response to the body when the body is fighting against any infection, but if the body temperature is 100°F or higher after a root canal, then it is a strong sign that infection has developed.

  1. Pus Drainage: The most common sign of infection after root canal treatment is pus is formed inside the tooth. The yellowish fluid and foul smell are quite definitely a clear sign of root canal infection.

  1. Bad Taste: If you find that you have an awful taste or odor from the mouth, then this is a strong sign of root canal infection. This usually happens due to the buildup of bacteria in that particular tooth.

If you observe any of the above symptoms after your root canal treatment, go to a dental clinic and seek professional advice from a dentist. Root canal infection will not resolve by itself.
